Our story takes place in the Empire of Khalad, which covers much of the known world. It is a peaceful, prosperous empire ages old.

Centuries ago, the emporer became concerned with the advent of magic users in his kingdom, fearing that they might try to overthrow him, as the most powerful ones can certainly defeat his armies in battle. In order to combat this threat, he insisted they create a self-regulating group that answers directly to the crown, that rogue wizards with delusions of grandeur might be put in their place before they cause undue harm.

The wizards resisted at first, but eventually joined to form the Wizard's Guild, Led by the Wizard's Council, which holds much power in the Empire; some would say more than the emporer himself.

Since then, there has become a belief that all magic-user not under the guild, and all cr4eatures of magic are evil, despicable things that must be destroyed lest they sow chaos and strife in their wake. The Wizards have created two groups of save the populous from these vile beings. The first, and larger of the groups are the Hunters. Not wizards themselves, they are master trackers and warriors, skilled at bringing down rogue wizard and foul beast alike. The other is the Slayers, wizards who take on the more powerful of beasts, as well as experiment with creating an agent of genocide, thus removing the threat of these creatures once and for all.
